Solution

Solution

To encourage long-term participation, we established payout rules that ensure farmers benefit over time — with instalment payouts requiring at least 5 years in the program. The new Wallet design provides dedicated spaces for direct payouts and future payouts, making the process clear, fair, and motivating.

Process

Understand

We started our work by outlining the rules for instalment payouts. Then we listed cases that could cause payout deductions to assess their scale and impact on the business. We learned that there might be many small instances affecting yearly payouts.

We realised we needed to explain not only the instalment rules clearly but also all the small, interconnected payout deduction events.

Ideate

During the ideation session, we outlined two promising directions for the wallet structure: “Simplified” and “Accurate”. The Simplified version grouped payouts into “current” and “future,” while the Accurate version displayed a year-by-year timeline with detailed overviews.

Envision

After testing the layout with realistic data, we realised that the "Simplified" idea worked better. Both overviews were easy to access and established the right hierarchy of importance, highlighting direct payouts over vested funding. At the same time we managed to keep it light while still providing enough detail to explain small deductions and balance corrections.

Validate

After testing our prototypes, 6 out of 6 farmers confiremed that the overview helps easily understand payout terms and statuses. They also saw a value in submitting data for a year with a negative payout. However, they admited that staying in the program would depend on other factors like how much money they could earn in following years and if they are any financial demands or obligations.

With two wallets we were able to create a focus on the next payout and accumulate all future instalments in simple yet motivating overview.

We added a total balance at the top so farmers can see installments grow over time, making the reward even more motivating.

Farmers are proactively informed that there is no financial obligation in years without a payout.

We put a lot of effort into the details to create consistent rules and scalable designs. I worked closely with engineers to estimate refactoring efforts early and to update patterns holistically.

Cards are designed modularly to ensure consistency, optimise development effort, and allow building blocks to be hidden or swapped.

We set color rules for payout values but avoided using red, since balance deductions will happen and farmers likely won't be able to change this.

We restructured our datasets to track and report deductions accurately, creating transparency for farmers and for the clients who pay for carbon reductions.
